2026 JGI Jazz Cohort Fellow, Victor Campbell is a young jazz piano player hailing from Camagüey, Cuba. His compelling style combines virtuosity, whimsy, charisma and technical prowess. Notably, it is just plain fun to watch Victor perform. He started playing piano at age 5 and went on to train at Cuba’s National School of the Arts. He has since played all over the United States, and internationally. Victor first visited New Orleans in 2012 as a teenager, part of an exchange program with the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. That visit changed his life and in 2019 Victor decided to move to New Orleans. He has been feverishly studying all styles of New Orleans music ever since, and incorporating it into his own musical language. He can effortlessly transition from a blues solo, to a Cuban timba montuno, and then right into a classical piano selection. In a 2019 interview, the great Chucho Valdés predicted that, “Victor will revolutionize Cuban jazz piano.”
After performing as a featured new artist at several CubaNOLA showcases, Victor now has several New Orleans-based bands and collaborations, including his high-energy big band Timba Swamp, and is a fervent leader of the city’s growing Cuba-New Orleans fusion renaissance scene, which also includes collaborations with the Cuban funk phenomenon, Cimafunk, and New Orleans legends like Delfeayo Marsalis’ Uptown Jazz Orchestra. Most recently, he was recruited by renowned musical director Raphael Saadiq to play piano on the Oscar-nominated soundtrack for 2025’s Academy Award-winning film by director Ryan Coogler, "SINNERS.”
This evening, Victor performs one of his acclaimed solo piano shows.

On the streets of New Orleans, where brass bands play every Sunday for weekly second line parades, it’s not unusual for one brass band to catch the ear of the streets and dominate the second line season. Not long after their founding in 2017, the Big 6 Brass Band had the streets on lock. Their mixtape, which has made the rounds in the second line community, features covers of songs by Michael Jackson, Fantasia, and SZA, among others. Unsatisfied with playing only “radio tunes,” their song catalog runs deep into brass band history as they breathe new life into time-honored traditional tunes like “Red Dress” and “Lilly of the Valley.” Their debut album, Big Six, was released on June 24, 2019 on all streaming platforms. A thirteen-song tour through their original music, it’s an instant classic including hits like “Go Down,” and “On the Run.”
The band’s all-star lineup is comprised of some of the most talented young brass band musicians in the city. Though the band is relatively young, their pedigree reveals a wealth of experience as their roster includes current and former members of Rebirth, The Stooges, Hot 8, TBC, and Da Truth brass bands. Though their music maintains ties to the tradition from which they come, they are very much the vanguard of the brass band scene. Their sound, which combines smooth R&B with the rough and ready sound of the streets, is, more than any other band, representative of the sound of contemporary New Orleans brass band music.
Catch them tonight at Celebration Hall next to the historic Autocrat Social Aid & Pleasure Club for their Sunday night residency, squarely in the 7th Ward.

Anaïs St. John is a renowned New Orleans-based jazz, blues, and cabaret vocalist. Known for her sultry stage presence, the Creole songstress and daughter of jazz saxophonist Marion Brown seamlessly blends her classical operatic background with classic cabaret flair.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in Music from Xavier University, a master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the University of New Orleans, and has attended the prestigious Cabaret Conference at Yale University in 2004 and 2007. Her commanding performances have been a staple at prominent New Orleans venues such as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest), French Quarter Fest, the Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, and Le Chat Noir. She also held longtime residencies at some of the city's swankiest hotel lounges, such as the Polo Club at the Windsor Court Hotel, The Ritz-Carleton, and The Bombay Club.
However, perhaps most popularly, St. John is famous for crafting one-woman cabaret tribute shows honoring legendary icons like Donna Summer (her "Last Dance" show), Eartha Kitt, Josephine Baker, and Lola Falana. Her sultry, classic style has taken her to European stages, including the Umbria Winter Jazz Festival in Italy and Jazz Ascona in Switzerland.
Beyond her vibrant nightlife and festival schedule, St. John is a dedicated educator. Since 2006, she has taught music at Trinity Episcopal School in New Orleans, inspiring the next generation while maintaining her active performing career.

If the name Paulin sounds familiar, there’s a reason for that – Roderick is the son of legendary New Orleans bandleader Ernest “Doc” Paulin who led brass bands on the streets of New Orleans for over 70 years. Doc insisted that musicians in his bands adhere to certain professional standards on and off stage. Many young players began their music career by performing with Doc Paulin and have gone on to achieve musical prominence such as clarinetist Dr. Michael White, Alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr. and trumpeter Gregg Stafford among scores of local New Orleans musicians.
Simply put, Roderick Paulin is one of the most soulful, versatile and accomplished saxophonists in New Orleans. Roderick’s musical career spans over four decades collaborating with artists such as John Legend, Harry Connick Jr, Aaron Neville, Allen Toussaint, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Christian McBride, Trombone ‘Shorty’ Andrews, Wynton Marsalis, The Grateful Dead, PJ Morton, The Brand New Heavies, The Afghan Whigs, Branford Marsalis, and the ReBirth Brass Band.
Paulin’s experience as an arranger, producer, saxophonist/clarinetist continues to serve him well as he’s a highly sought after clinician/master class educator teaching the fundamentals of music and economic empowerment to students of all ages and demographics. For the last 10 years, Paulin has served on the faculty of the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp of New Orleans which is the longest running, minority-owned and operated music organization that serves public and private school students of New Orleans and surrounding communities.
Tonight, he leads his Mahogany Jazz Hall Swingsters for his Sunday night residency.

Will Smith grew up in Preservation Hall, where his sister Dodie Smith-Simmons worked and his brother-in-law trumpeter John “Kid” Simmons sometimes played. Smith used to help push Sweet Emma’s wheelchair to the car when her son came to pick her up, and most of the time she said something mean. “She was a real cantankerous old broad, but she was a great entertainer who captivated the audience,” Smith recalled. After following around his brother-in-law, Smith could not wait to get an instrument of his own. His parents eventually bought him a trumpet, and he has been playing New Orleans jazz ever since.
Hall legends Percy Humphrey, Ernie Cagnolatti, Kid Thomas, and DeDe Pierce remain a part of Smith’s musical fiber and have greatly influenced his sound. In 1975 Smith joined the Fairview Baptist Church Band, led by legendary jazzman Danny Barker, and he has played and toured with numerous traditional brass bands, including the Storyville Stompers and Harold Dejan’s Olympia Brass Band, as well as the Doc Paulin, Chosen Few, Treme, Tornado, Lil’ Rascals, and Pinstripe brass bands.

Charlie & The Tropicales rejuvenate a wide swath of vintage Caribbean sounds, from cumbia, calypso, biguine and son Cubano to rocksteady and New Orleans R&B-inspired rock & roll. Led by trombonist and composer Charlie Halloran, The Tropicales breathe new life into 1950s-era tropical dance pop tunes while introducing new layers of fusion. Think: “Ruler of My Heart,” rocksteady-style, or Venezuela’s classic joropo “Alma Llanera” spiked with calypso energy.
The New Orleans-based 8-piece ensemble draws inspiration from Cuban son, mambo, and Caribbean music, reimagining traditional forms while honoring their roots, featuring rich horn lines, infectious percussion, and soulful improvisation. Known for high-energy performances and deep rhythmic feel, The Tropicales have become a standout presence in the New Orleans music scene, bringing tropical flavor and modern jazz sensibility to audiences near and far.
Tonight, they are joined on this double-bill with local singer-songwriter siren, Sarah Quintana.

In New Orleans, the birthplace of Jazz and the city of family music traditions, Gerald French hails from one of the pioneering families of Traditional Jazz. French is known as "The Giant," not just for his imposing presence on the band stand, but also for his original style of drumming that has him traveling the world and playing all types of music.
For more than 15 years, French has been the drummer for Charmaine Neville. He also holds the drum seat for the internationally known group The Dixie Cups. In addition, French has traveled and performed with Harry Connick, Jr’s Big Band, Leroy Jones, Dr. John, Dr. Michael White, Lillian Boutté, Jeremy Davenport, Big Chief Bo Dollis, the Wild Magnolias, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and others.
Importantly and as a source of immense personal pride, since December 2011, Gerald has been leader of the oldest continuously performing jazz band, The Original Tuxedo Jazz Band. The band traces its roots to 1910 when jazz was gathering steam in the byways of New Orleans. French is the fifth leader in the band’s history. He also works with The Joe Ashlar Organ Trio, Fritzel’s Jazz Band, and his own original bands Abstract and Déjà Vu. In addition to his drumming skills, French is an accomplished vocalist and sings lead in all of his own bands. French is a Sabian Cymbals and Taye Drums -endorsed artist.
Join us tonight for his weekly residency at Mahogany Jazz Hall with the Gerald French Trio.

From playing himself in the HBO Series Tremé, to barbecuing outside his bar, Kermit’s Tremé Mother-in-Law Lounge, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, trumpeter/vocalist KERMIT RUFFINS keeps himself busy when he isn’t on stage doing what he does best—entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world.
But he did not come by his gifts easily. Ruffins did his homework and developed his stage persona and musical act by studying artists who came before him. He watched videos of Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway until the tape wore out, cut his teeth busking the streets of the French Quarter, and apprenticed on stages with local legends “Uncle” Lionel Batiste and Danny Barker.
While still in high school, he co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band, but eventually left the touring band to return home to the culture he missed so much, launching The BBQ Swingers, now a beloved New Orleans institution.
Some say he resembles king pops, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong himself. You be the judge. ALL ABOARD!

Born in 1958, trumpeter Leroy Jones was raised in New Orleans’s 7th Ward. He started playing cornet at St. Leo the Great Elementary School and soon got a trumpet. When he was twelve, his neighbor Danny Barker heard him practicing and recruited him for the Fairview Baptist Church Band, which Jones later led. Sometimes after finishing Fairview gigs in the French Quarter, Jones and his bandmates would stop by Preservation Hall to listen.
Jones went on to play with Harry Connick Jr. and His Orchestra and become a member of the New Orleans Jazz Hall of Fame. Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard remembers growing up around Jones: “He was the guy that was well ahead of his time. He played with a command and maturity that is still unmatched. When I listened to him play I always imagined myself having that tone, or his sense of phrasing, and definitely his sense of rhythm. He was and still is my hero.” These days, when he’s not on tour, Jones leads his own band at Preservation Hall each week, delighting audiences with his impeccable technique, modern swing, and warm, gentle voice.
Join us tonight for his bi-weekly residency at Three Maries Jazz Club in the French Quarter.

Catch them tonight on their home turf for their Friday night residency, squarely in the 6th Ward, in the heart of Tremé at Ms. Chinee's Candlelight Lounge neighborhood corner bar, nestled right next to Tuba Fats Square.
Cash or CashApp at the door.

Redefining modern jazz through a sousaphone lens, BassX is a rising New Orleans jazz fusion collective led by GRAMMY-nominated artist Julius McKee. Rooted in the city’s rich jazz tradition, BassX reimagines traditional jazz through a progressive lens—honoring its origins while allowing the music to evolve in real time.
Drawing from a classic New Orleans traditional setup, BassX revisits the early foundations of the music by reintroducing the sousaphone, an instrument that once played a central role in the tradition before the upright bass became standard. This approach reconnects the sound to its historical roots while opening space for new rhythmic, melodic, and textural possibilities. Rather than reproducing tradition note-for-note, BassX treats it as a living language. Performances balance structure and spontaneity, emphasizing groove, deep listening, and collective interaction. The result is music that feels familiar yet forward-looking—grounded in history, shaped by the moment, and responsive to the room.BassX operates as a collective, reminiscent of traditions of several eras past such as that of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers or Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, collaborating with a rotating roster of New Orleans musicians drawn from the city’s deep and diverse jazz community. Line-ups vary by project, venue, and context, allowing the music to remain flexible and rooted in collaboration rather than fixed personnel.

Sullivan Dabney is a professional drummer and vocalist born, trained, and based in New Orleans. For over 50+ years, he has performed in bandleader and support roles, debuting his first band during high school, The Orientals, and starting his long-term project, Sullivan Dabney Muzik Jazz Band, in 1972.
Mr. Dabney has toured extensively throughout the US and abroad. He’s been a staple at both French Quarter Fest and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival for eyars, and headlined multiple international jazz festivals in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and beyond. He’s appeared in numerous films and commercials, performed for famed Bourbon Street entertainer Chris Owens, LA Representative Lindy Boggs, and for eight years he played with the Krewe of Bacchus parade. With his Muzik Jazz Band, long-term local residencies include Harrah’s Casino and from 1986 – 2019, he performed on the Creole Queen, Cajun Queen, and River Rose New Orleans Paddlewheelers, where he was also the Director of Entertainment from 2016-2019.
Mr. Dabney’s musicality developed from percussion experiments with his mother’s pots and pans to memorizing the lyrics that drifted through the neighborhoods from local jukeboxes, porch steps, and radio. Early performance experience included playing trombone in the LB Landry Junior Marching Band and becoming the school’s flag bearer in its Senior Band. Dabney then was transferred to George Washington Carver Senior High School. There, under the tutelage of influential music educator and bandleader Miss Yvonne Busch, Dabney honed his craft and cultivated the discipline required of a working musician as he started playing the drums again and then became the section leader of the school’s band.
He shrugs off the label of traditional jazz often assigned to him, instead describing his style as a synthesis of jazz dialects, R & B, and various New Orleans phrasings. In his words, he plays to the room, “a little bit of everything to please everyone”, adding that he “seasons” the music to taste. In 1967, Mr. Dabney joined Tommy Ridgley’s R&B outfit, The Untouchables. Ridgley became a mentor, stressing the importance of professionalism and presentation, and learning the business of music. Dabney later toured with Ernie K-Doe for five years, and played with greats like Johnny Adams, King Floyd, Irma Thomas, Eddie Bo, Porky Jones, Jean Knight, Margie Joseph, Sammy Ridgley, among many others.

Having written with Grammy nominated spoken word artist Queen Sheba and opened for talent the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Meshell N’Degeocello, Stephen Marley, Steel Pulse, Arrested Development, and Dick Gregory, perhaps her most compelling musical encounter came from Chaka Khan herself during a chance meeting on an airplane. On June 26th, we'll time-travel back to the future of the early 1980s in New Orleans, when a young guitarist, Steve Masakowski, premiered what would become one of the innovations that cemented him as one of the city's great inventors: his hand-made key-tar. Masakowski's new instrument though, was not the "keyboard on a strap" - mass-produced by Moog and popularized by artists like Herbie Hancock and Prince - that most of us think of today when we hear the term "keytar." Steve's key-tar was still a guitar at heart, but reconstructed with his own cutting edge bespoke midi technology, at his house in New Orleans, incorporating electronics into the string instrument in a new way.
One of Steve's musical peers, Lawrence Sieberth, was also experimenting with new synthesizer keyboards coming out at the time, so Steve formed a band with Lawrence, the now late great rhythm reinventor James Black on drums, multi-instrumentalist James Singleton on bass, and a rebel crew of other exploratory musician friends.
They called the band MARS and focused on original music influenced by the early evolving electronic instruments and composers of the day. They recorded and released an LP simply entitled “Mars” in 1982 that featured other prominent jazz musicians that Steve was collaborating with, including Dave Liebman on sax, Ricky Sebastian on drums (who was also playing with the raucous Jaco Pastorius at the time), Patrice Fisher on harp, and Kent Jordan on flute. During the 1980s, the band would frequently present concerts with visual artist John Graubarth.
In 2023, MARS reunited for the first time in years, and tonight, four of the band's original members reunite once again, for one night only, for "Mars Revisited," featuring some of the music performed by the original group with Ricky Sebastian substituting for the late, great James Black on drums. And yes, Steve's enigmatic handmade key-tar will be there, making a rare appearance.
MARS REVISITED features:
Steve Masakowski - 7-string guitar, electric key-tar
Lawrence Sieberth - synthesizer keyboards
James Singleton- bass
Ricky Sebastian - drums
