Redefining modern jazz through a sousaphone lens, BassX is a rising New Orleans jazz fusion collective led by GRAMMY-nominated artist Julius McKee. Rooted in the city’s rich jazz tradition, BassX reimagines traditional jazz through a progressive lens—honoring its origins while allowing the music to evolve in real time.

Drawing from a classic New Orleans traditional setup, BassX revisits the early foundations of the music by reintroducing the sousaphone, an instrument that once played a central role in the tradition before the upright bass became standard. This approach reconnects the sound to its historical roots while opening space for new rhythmic, melodic, and textural possibilities. Rather than reproducing tradition note-for-note, BassX treats it as a living language. Performances balance structure and spontaneity, emphasizing groove, deep listening, and collective interaction. The result is music that feels familiar yet forward-looking—grounded in history, shaped by the moment, and responsive to the room.BassX operates as a collective, reminiscent of traditions of several eras past such as that of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers or Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, collaborating with a rotating roster of New Orleans musicians drawn from the city’s deep and diverse jazz community. Nayo Jones (pronounced Nīyō) was born in Chicago, Illinois into a family of musicians and destined to be in show business. As an accomplished jazz musician and music educator, her father William “Doc” Jones groomed and nurtured her natural ability from a very young age. Nayo grew up listening to Jazz standards that proved to be a solid foundation and would later become a signature in her own show. Accomplished in her own right, Jones is also a classically trained flutist.

Currently Nayo is based in New Orleans, LA where she performs regularly with her band “The Nayo Jones Experience”. In addition to her own show, Ms. Jones also tours alongside New Orleans iconic jazz trumpeter, Kermit Ruffins as the featured vocalist and has toured with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra lead by Adonis Rose and is a featured vocalist on their album celebrating the famed Allen Toussaint with a beautiful rendition of "Ruler of My Heart."

Nayo’s vocal range has been compared to the likes of Natalie Cole, Nancy Wilson, even Whitney Houston. She has been the opening act for artists such as the legendary George Benson, Chris Botti, Rick Braun & Richard Elliot and more.

Nayo has performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, French Quarter Fest, Satchmo SummerFest, and many other Louisiana festivals annually since 2012. She has consistently drawn rave reviews for her performances. Nayo and her band, “The Nayo Jones Experience” has a  longstanding residency at the Carousel Lounge located in the historic Hotel Montelone and The Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the French Quarter. Dr. Michael White is a renowned clarinetist, bandleader, composer, historian, and educator regarded as a leading authority of traditional New Orleans jazz. In 2015 he produced and performed on New Orleans Brass Bands: Through the Streets of the City for the Smithsonian Institution and has served as a guest director for Jazz at Lincoln Center .  Formerly a senior professor of African American music at Xavier University of Louisiana, White has toured internationally for more than three decades and recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal, Paul Simon, and Marianne Faithfull. He was named Chevalier of Arts & Letters by the French government (1995), received the Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts (2008), was honored as Humanist of the Year by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (2010), and was repeatedly recognized as Clarinetist of the Year by OffBeat Magazine.

Havana, Cuba-born percussionist Alexey Martí has been making New Orleans his home since 2008 and tearing up stages all over town. With two albums to his name, "Travesia" and "Mundo," Alexey brings together timba, jazz, funk, Afro-Cuban folklore, salsa, son, rumba, and New Orleans rhythms in his original compositions. As a member of the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra (NOJO) and bandleader of his own collectives, Alexey incorporates elements of modern New Orleans percussion into his flavorful Cuban conga and rumba music and the result is a dance-worthy, high-energy show.

If the name Paulin sounds familiar, there’s a reason for that – Roderick Paulin is the son of legendary New Orleans bandleader Ernest “Doc” Paulin who led brass bands on the streets of New Orleans for over 70 years. Doc insisted that musicians in his bands adhere to certain professional standards on and off stage. Many young players began their music career by performing with Doc Paulin and have gone on to achieve musical prominence, such as clarinetist Dr. Michael White, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr, and trumpeter Gregg Stafford, among scores of local New Orleans musicians.

Roderick’s musical career spans over four decades collaborating with artists such as John Legend, Harry Connick Jr, Aaron Neville, Allen Toussaint, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Christian McBride, Trombone ‘Shorty’ Andrews, Wynton Marsalis, The Grateful Dead, PJ Morton, The Brand New Heavies, The Afghan Whigs, Branford Marsalis, and the ReBirth Brass Band.

Paulin’s experience as an arranger, producer, saxophonist/clarinetist continues to serve him well as he’s a highly sought after clinician/master class educator teaching the fundamentals of music and economic empowerment to students of all ages and demographics. In addition to teaching on the faculty at Southern University at New Orleans' music department, for the last 10 years, Paulin has also served on the faculty of the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp of New Orleans which is the longest running, minority-owned and operated music organization that serves public and private school students of New Orleans and surrounding communities.

His musical talents and interests were nurtured at the city’s own New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), the Jazz Heritage School of Music, and Southern University at New Orleans. The Soul Rebels are an eight-piece New Orleans brass band known for mashing up traditional jazz and marching band roots with funk, hip-hop, soul, and rock. Founded in 1991 by percussionists Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss, they have become a globally touring phenomenon.

Originating from the Young Olympia Brass Band, the members decided to break away to incorporate contemporary radio hits and hip-hop into their arrangements. Performing at the iconic Uptown New Orleans club Tipitina's in 1991, Cyril Neville suggested they name their group after the Bob Marley song "Soul Rebels," cementing their new progressive direction.

The collective has since become renowned for crossing genres and performing with massive stars. They have collaborated with hip-hop and pop legends including Nas, Katy Perry, Metallica, GZA (Wu-Tang Clan), G-Eazy, and DMX. A graduate of the Loyola University School of Music, Jordan Bush is a New Orleans-based jazz pianist, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist active in the local live music scene. He frequently performs solo, with collaborative ensembles, and alongside the Arrowhead Jazz Band featuring National Park Service rangers.

Robin Barnes, the acclaimed “Songbird of New Orleans,” is a Billboard Top 10 charting artist whose powerful voice bridges jazz, funk, soul, zydeco, Creole traditions, and Louisiana’s rich musical heritage. Her 2026 album, Louisiana Love, celebrates nine generations of Louisiana culture through collaborations with Ivan Neville, Big Freedia, The Soul Rebels, Rockin’ Dopsie Jr., and Cedric Watson. Barnes has performed at Jazz Fest, the Sundance Film Festival, London’s Royal Opera House, and beyond, delivering unforgettable performances rooted in joy, culture, and community. We’re thrilled to have her at the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music.

Using influences from the culture of his hometown and combining it his extensive touring across the globe as a pianist, he has developed a unique approach to his music and performance. Ricardo Pascal is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator rooted in the Black American tradition—a blend of swing, bebop, blues, R&B, and soul, all woven together with the heartbeat of New Orleans music. A longtime member of Marcus Roberts’ Modern Jazz Generation and Judith Owen and the Gentlemen Callers, he has also performed with artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Herlin Riley, and Phillip Manuel. The Soul Rebels are an eight-piece New Orleans brass band known for mashing up traditional jazz and marching band roots with funk, hip-hop, soul, and rock. Founded in 1991 by percussionists Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss, they have become a globally touring phenomenon.

Originating from the Young Olympia Brass Band, the members decided to break away to incorporate contemporary radio hits and hip-hop into their arrangements. Performing at the iconic Uptown New Orleans club Tipitina's in 1991, Cyril Neville suggested they name their group after the Bob Marley song "Soul Rebels," cementing their new progressive direction.

The collective has since become renowned for crossing genres and performing with massive stars. They have collaborated with hip-hop and pop legends including Nas, Katy Perry, Metallica, GZA (Wu-Tang Clan), G-Eazy, and DMX. Their energetic sound has also made them a staple in film and television, scoring original music for Disney's 2023 movie Haunted Mansion and appearing on the soundtrack for Girls Trip. They have also appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NPR's Tiny Desk.

Among several other hits, their song "Let Your Mind Be Free" remains one of the most popular New Orleans brass band staples to-date.

Catch them tonight at their monthly Frenchmen Street residency - one of only two rare opportunities these days to experience The Rebels live in a small room, the size of the ones they started out in over 30+ years ago.
