In the JGI's first major NYC concert, voices in poetry and music unite across generations. NEA Jazz Master Amina Claudine Myers; Samora Pinderhughes and the Healing Project; Courtney Bryan; Fred Moten and Brandon Lopez; and Alexis Pauline Gumbs will perform.
Soundoff Session
Tyrone Allen II performs as part of THE SOUNDOFF SESSIONS, presented every other Thursday at Erzulie by the Jazz Generations Initiative. Allen is an exceptional bass player who has played with some of the top contemporaries of his time, including Nicole Glover, Sullivan Fortner, Miki Yamanaka, Kazemde George and myriad others.
Soundoff Session
The Jazz Generations Initiative presents the Trap Music Orchestra to kick off THE SOUNDOFF SESSIONS, a new series of performances and open jams every other Thursday at Cafe Erzulie, hosted by the JGI. Synchronizing the aural lineage of Black music around the centerpiece of Trap Music, the group is equal parts time capsule, mosaic, lecture and party.

Samora Pinderhughes, Mahogany L. Browne and others will convene for an evening of poetry and conversation, in the wake of the JGI's Voices of Healing & Liberation concert.

The Nigerian-American drummer and bandleader Michael Shekwoaga Ode has played alongside many masters of the music. He brings a powerful personal style to the Soundoff Sessions for a set at 9pm, followed by an open jam at 10:30.

Jason Clotter has become a go-to bassist to support some of the most illustrious names in jazz, including Kenny Garrett and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. At this Soundoff Session, Clotter leads a quartet in a 9 pm set, and then will open up the room for a semi-curated session at 10:30 pm.

In association with the Jazz Generations Initiative (JGI), To Save and Project (the 22nd MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation) premieres newly restored films from the late 1960s featuring the music and words of three jazz legends: Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, and Archie Shepp. Introduced by Robert O’Meally, Manthia Diawara, and Henry Threadgill

Baltimore-based trumpeter Brandon Woody has taken the jazz world by storm in the past two years, releasing an acclaimed debut LP on Blue Note Records and establishing his band UPENDO as one of the prime live acts around. They play the Soundoff Sessions at 9pm, with an open jam at 10:30.

The young NYC-based tenor saxophonist Ben Sherman isn't yet 20 years old, but he's already lighting up stages around his hometown. He's torn it up twice at the Soundoff Sessions as a member of others' bands. Now he steps up as a leader. Set at 9pm, open jam at 10:30.
