JGI New Orleans draws inspiration from the city of New Orleans and its connections with the African diaspora, the Global South, and the Gulf South region.

New Orleans-bred saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and educator Victor Goines is one of the world's most respected voices in jazz. Notably, Victor performed in the Ellis Marsalis Quartet for a number of years beginning in the 1980s. Ellis later hired Victor as a faculty member when he created the University of New Orleans (UNO) Jazz Studies Department in 1989. Goines is widely recognized as one of the most engaging and versatile performers and composers in music today. Drawing from his New Orleans roots, his extraordinary career includes performances throughout the world earning acclaim from audiences, critics and colleagues, including as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in NYC and the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993.

He has recorded and/or performed with many iconic jazz and popular artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Ruth Brown, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Dizzy Gillespie, Lenny Kravitz, Ellis Marsalis Jr, Branford Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Willie Nelson, Marcus Roberts, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and many more.

His discography boasts over 20 albums as a bandleader, and recordings on over 70 other releases, including Wynton Marsalis' Pulitzer Prize-winning recording, "Blood on the Fields" and Ted Nash's Grammy Award-winning "Presidential Suite." A gifted composer, Goines has more than 100 original works to his credit, including his 1992 debut album "Genesis" on the late Harold Battiste Jr's seminal AFO Records. In 2000, he was commissioned by Juilliard's Dance Division to compose a musical work in celebration of their 50th Anniversary.

In recent years, he was selected to lead music and jazz departments at Juilliard NYC and Northwestern University in Chicago, and served as executive artistic director of Jazz St. Louis from 2022 - 2026.

Goines returns home to New Orleans this summer for a Monthly Residency at Snug Harbor.

For nearly four decades, The Rebirth Brass Band has redefined what it means to bring the vibrant spirit of New Orleans music to the world. Founded in 1983 by brothers Phil and Keith Frazier along with their friend Kermit Ruffins straight out of playing together in Tremé's Joseph Clark High School marching band, they revolutionized the traditional brass band sound by blending heavy second-line rhythms with funk, soul, R&B, and hip-hop.

The band quickly became a sensation, blending the traditional brass sounds of the Big Easy with modern funk, jazz, soul, and hip-hop influences. What began as a group of high school musicians performing on the streets of New Orleans has now evolved into a world-renowned musical force.

From their earliest gigs at the now-legendary Maple Leaf Bar to Grammy Award-winning recordings, The Rebirth Brass Band continues to push the boundaries of brass music. In 2012, the band received the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album for "Rebirth of New Orleans," solidifying their place as both guardians of tradition and pioneers of innovation. Since then they have collaborated with major acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Roots, Green Day, and a slew of star hip-hop MCs.

Their sound is a seamless blend of second-line rhythms and energetic brass arrangements that resonate with audiences young and old. Whether performing at Mardi Gras parades, festivals like Jazz Fest, or on international stages, The Rebirth Brass Band brings an unmatched energy that compels every listener to dance.

Byron Asher is a saxophonist, clarinetist and composer based in New Orleans and working at the intersection of broadly experimental composition and jazz and improvised music.

Since arriving there in 2011, he has become an integral member of New Orleans’ creative music community as a bandleader, collaborator, improviser, composer, and curator. His practice is dedicated to exploring new sounds across genre, and he is committed to building community through assembling and participating in ensembles that bring together musicians from a diversity of training and aesthetic backgrounds.

Raised in Maryland, he has performed across Europe and the US at major art centers and festivals as well as at dive bars and DIY spaces. Festivals include the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and French Quarter Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland, Jazz a Vienne, France, and the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival, Czech Republic. He has also played shows and festivals in Germany, Poland, and Slovakia and has had his compositions featured at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

He was a 2022 OneBeat Fellow, a program of the US State Department, for which he was an artist in residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (Florida). As a composer, Byron has held residencies at MacDowell (New Hampshire), A Studio In The Woods (New Orleans) and Barn Arts (Maine). His work has been funded by the Doris Duke Foundation, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (NYC), South Arts (Atlanta), the Jazz And Heritage Foundation (NOLA), the Threadhead Cultural Foundation (NOLA), and the Puffin Foundation (Teaneck, NJ).

Byron maintains an active performing and recording schedule in New Orleans and around the US as a leader and a sideman. His award-winning Skrontch Music large ensemble released its second recording, Lord, when you send the rain, on Sinking City Records in 2024. Their 2019 debut recording was named a top 20 jazz release of the year by textura.org. Byron’s “free jazz party band” Basher’s 2022 release Doubles received 4 stars from Downbeat Magazine and was called “unbearably beautiful” by Pitchfork. A new Basher recording, May Day, was released in May 2024. He has released three albums with his collaboratively led trio, Nutria. In 2021, his duo recording with drummer Brad Webb, Little Bigby, was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Recording by New Orleans’ Offbeat Magazine.

Byron is also adjunct music faculty at the University of New Orleans, where he teaches classes and ensembles for undergraduate and graduate students.

For his rolling residency at Bacchanal on Monday evenings, Byron invites a rotating cast of collaborators and local musicians each week, ranging from intimate duo performances to some of his larger ensembles.
