DUAL is a continuation of a series I started in 2023, as an answer to what felt like strident categorization and division in nightlife after Covid. After sitting at home, I yearned for a time when music performance was intimate, vast and unconcerned with genre.
DUAL joins together two live performers from different scenes with an expansive selector — for a night of music that refutes all categorization. The experience is the priority; the connection between creator and listener is central.
The Jazz Generations Initiative (JGI) aims to close the gap between generations of creative musicians, to bring masters of all ages to the forefront, and to strengthen the relationships between jazz and other disciplines.
In my work with the JGI, I interpret this mission as an opportunity to find new ways of presenting this music, our music, away from archaic templates that have kept jazz in isolation. For me, this means bringing Cleo Reed together with Brandon Woody and Cosmo, Immanuel Wilkins together with KeiyaA and Ọmọ Igi, Miriam Elhajli together with Malik Abdul-Rahmaan and myself.
This is a lifelong pursuit. Pushing for all forms of creative and folkloric music to have a home amongst each other.
Join us at Public Records: July 14th, August 12th and September 3rd.
