John Zorn’s late-’80s and early-’90s experiments with metal and hardcore, in projects such as Naked City and Painkiller, opened up new pathways in underground music. Around a decade ago, he picked up this thread in a major way with Simulacrum, an industrial-strength organ trio featuring multifarious keyboard great John Medeski and extreme-music luminaries Matt Hollenberg on guitar and Kenny Grohowski on drums.
