In 40-plus years on the New York scene, Tim Berne has consistently performed world-class avant-jazz in humble surroundings. After decades of gigging in cozy, now-bygone spots, the saxophonist and composer has found what feels like his quintessential home at Lowlands, a neighborhood bar in Gowanus. His latest in a series of regular gigs there features the keyboardist Craig Taborn and the drummer Tom Rainey — both of whom worked with him in the incendiary early-2000s trio Hardcell — along with the multi-instrumentalist Aurora Nealand and the cellist Aliya Ultan.
