The saxophonist Ricky Ford scored his first major gig in the mid-’70s, when he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra shortly after the deaths of both its legendary founder and its tenor saxophone giant Paul Gonsalves. Since then, Ford has worked with various jazz greats, including Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, Beaver Harris and Abdullah Ibrahim, and the result is a tenor sound that embodies old-school romanticism, deep blues feeling and post-Coltrane fire. Here he’s leading the same outstanding band featured on his recent Gonsalves tribute effort, Paul’s Scene, with the pianist Mark Soskin, the bassist Jerome Harris and the drummer Barry Altschul.
