Brandon Seabrook's Utility Modern with Bill Frisell, Rashaan Carter and Marcus Gilmore + Zeena Parkins
“I wanted this music to sound like one giant guitar,” the guitarist (and sometime banjo player) Brandon Seabrook has said of Utility Modern, a forthcoming album that unites him with one of his formative inspirations, Bill Frisell. The record makes ample room for solo turns from each of these renowned six-string eccentrics, but what’s most impressive is the way they and the superlative rhythm section of Rashaan Carter (bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums) realize Seabrook’s exacting compositional designs. The band celebrates the record here with help from the eminent avant-garde harpist Zeena Parkins.
