Critically acclaimed and community celebrated, John Coltrane, influenced the saxophone music family throughout and after his life. He is known for connecting with his listeners through rich, smooth and spiritually played jazz. Inspired by the melodies of Johnny Hodges and Dexter Gordon, Coltrane further honed his natural, self-taught, skills by playing in Miles Davis’s band from 1955 to 1959. As excellently put in Coltrane 100’s biography, “…their relationship remains one of the most fruitful and significant in jazz history” (Coltrane 100, 2026). As a performance and recording artist, Coltrane was able to satisfy the creative freedom shown to him by Davis and balance the output of his musicality “…fiery, live recordings… [and] softer, more meditative [studio recordings]” (Coltrane 100, 2026).  

John Coltrane is a musician of reference for jazz students worldwide and for that reason the Congo Square Jazz Orchestra will pay homage to him through their concert in our third-floor Performance Center. There is no admission fee, and everyone is welcome!
